A good broker primarily acts as an intermediary between a seller and a buyer, or between a lessor and a lessee. He or she demonstrates strong interpersonal and listening skills and inspires confidence in others. With a sense of initiative and determination, he or she is both diplomat and skilled negotiator as well as conscientious and meticulous – to name just a few of a broker’s main qualities.
Real estate is a complex and well-regulated profession that requires strong skills. Real estate brokers are licensed by the Organisme d’autoréglementation du courtage immobilier du Québec (OACIQ) and their work is governed by the Real Estate Brokerage Act.
To qualify to practise the profession of real estate broker, you must (in order):
- Successfully complete a basic training program.
- Successfully pass the OACIQ certification examinations, an essential condition to obtain a licence.
- Follow a continuing education program.
